Jessica Jones just became Marvel’s new Captain America

Captain America may be one of the biggest heroes in the Marvel Comics fabric, as the star-studded hero has been a staple of the publisher’s comics for decades. While Steve Rogers originally carried the mantle, it has since been supported by a wide range of other characters, either within the main Earth-616 continuum or in various alternate universes. Variables Tracing Jessica Jones in the new, unexpected status quo, potential new relationships with Kilgrave make Jessica begin to question her own sanity and sanity. This takes a turn when Jessica returns home to find a woman who seems identical to her, who she assumes may not have had good intentions. They begin to fight, until that fight is broken up by Jessica III, who refers to herself as Captain America. She’s also wearing a version of her 1940s Captain America costume, but with Jessica’s signature black leather jacket, too.

While Jessica is far from being the first known female Marvel character to take on the role of Captain America (or its geographical equivalent), the importance of her taking on the mantle in Variables It’s certainly compelling, as it further exposes the narrative potential you can get in other corners of the multiverse. As series writer Gail Simone recently took to Twitter to elicit ridicule, it appears other forms of Jessica as well-established Marvel characters are on the way.

“You can expect many versions of Jessica that have been shown or hinted at, but the most exciting thing is, I think, we have several ‘what if’ versions that will expand the concept of what a Marvel character could be,” Simon said.
